Unicorn Selfies features Phoebe Howell and her best friend, the unicorn Marigold Heavenly Nostrils commissioning a secret clubhouse to be built by pixies. They do such an amazing job it requires a whole new advanced variant for the Shield of Boringness: the Cloak of Shabbiness. But a clubhouse is where members of a club meet up to enjoy their chosen interest, and the BFFs haven’t decided what theirs are yet. Can Max help them come up with a good club theme? Also featured are experiments with a magical form of time travel, the danger of doodling in your maths textbooks, the constituent parts of a weird childhood, extensive preparations for a unicorn family reunion and what happens when shadows become untethered from their owners?

The 15th volume of collected Phoebe and her Unicorn strips by writer/artist Dana Simpson marks ten years of newspaper publication, which is definitely a big milestone. The book collections are actually a couple of years behind the daily strips, but there are very few real-world markers so nobody except the most attentive fans would know the difference. In an interview for the tenth anniversary, Dana Simpson says she has no plans to do anything differently, but there is one change she’s going to make to Phoebe: “For the 10th anniversary, I’m pushing her age up from 9 to 10, which isn’t going to make a huge difference in the strip day to day but does indicate the slow passage of time. If it goes another decade, maybe she’ll turn 11. But we won’t ever see Phoebe grow up, because I personally have no plans to grow up.
