As leaders of the formidable Sea Dogs, Lesedi Singh and her brother Demarco were a formidable combination in the Sea of Thieves mythos, but his death changed things. Lesedi’s mission is now to cement her legacy by heading after the Siren Queen to save her brother’s soul, and to do that she needs to gather a few of her old crew back together again. That involves a few surprises.

It took an uncertain start and a gradual rise up the quality scale, but after four volumes the team of Jeremy Whitley and Rhoald Marcellius on Sea of Thieves are proven quality. They mix jokey pirate action with serious undertones and remain true to the spirit of the game inspiring the series. Other characters from the game appear, and as in the game format, to reach each succeeding stage of her quest requires Lesedi and her crew to overcome considerable odds.

Marcellius has developed his cartooning into an even busier action style than previously, and he handles the tongue in cheek moments of the script equally well. He has to redesign some characters to conform with what they’ve become, or who they’ve decided they are, and that’s also accomplished.

Readers also familiar with the game will pull far more from Sea of Thieves than those approaching it cold, as for them there’s the additional joy of seeing how Whitley filters in familiar faces. However, the motivations of each character are clearly laid out, so there’s no necessity to have immense background knowledge. Dive in for a pirate adventure with wit and charm.
