Writing partners Shannon and Dean Hale with artist Victoria Ying produced an all-ages delight with Diana: Princess of the Amazons, so this sequel is very welcome. It actually begins in very much the same way as the first book, but instead of spotlighting Diana it’s Nubia rushing around Themyscira finding things to do. However, being the only child there isn’t always fulfilling, so when she’s told of a mountain cave known as Hera’s Ear where wishes might be granted, Nubia takes a trip there.

The following morning Diana and Nubia wake up in the same bedroom. Each is convinced they’re Hippolyta’s only daughter, yet all the other Amazons know them as twins who’ve grown up together. It’s a mystery indeed.

As before, Ying is the consummate cartoonist in creating an idyllic world for Diana and Nubia, one any kid would want to explore, and whether grumpy or elated, she ensures younger readers know exactly how the characters are feeling. There are a few elements of danger, but Ying downplays them to ensure they’re not too scary.

The expectation might be that despite their changed circumstances Diana and Nubia immediately become friends, but that’s not the case. They’re mutually suspicious, each suspecting the other of jiggery-pokery, but put their misgivings aside long enough to try to solve the mystery. Things can be returned to normal, yet is that what they really want?

This is another charmer as Diana and Nubia do inevitably become friends, just not as soon as most young readers would like. Seeing them enjoy adventures together is as much fun as seeing Diana alone, and another sequel would be welcome.
