Review by Woodrow Phoenix
The Enchanting Escapades of Phoebe and Her Unicorn reprints two previous books from this series, Unicorn Crossing and Unicorn of Many Hats. Both the original books reprinted daily strips, so there’s no real start or end point to the storylines featured here. It all flows along like one continuous stream of Unicornanity, beginning with a long build up to Halloween, as Marigold decides to throw Phoebe a surprise party. Then there is a whole week of unicorn withdrawal when Marigold goes away to a unicorn spa and Phoebe has to adjust to being an ordinary girl with no magic, which is a much trickier transition than she expects. Some more secrets are revealed about Marigold’s extensive set of magical powers including her method for reading her favourite books over and over without getting bored with them: a forgetfulness spell which means she doesn’t remember having read them before. But as always with magic, the user has to be very careful not to overdo it.
Continuing through the year through Christmas and winter, snow days turn into summer and vacation time. There is a appearance from Lord Splendid Humility who inspires Marigold to write fan letters, and when Phoebe’s parents want to go out for the evening, a strong resumé from Marigold detailing her experience as ‘guardian of the precious Moonstones of the Shimmering castle’ and ‘Watcher of the dragon hatchlings of the Nicetooth clan’ convinces them she is the right creature for the job. There are two more previously published books collected together in The Sparkling Stories of Phoebe and Her Unicorn.
