The heroes are still in the tunnels beneath the Monster Association headquarters, and One just keeps throwing new threats at them. The monster faced in the first chapter is a variation on the Inhumans’ Medusa, controlling every strand of their hair, but in this case each strand is as deadly as a spear.

That’s only one of several new threats introduced, with Yusuke Murata again coming up trumps in their creation. A surprise awaits the fearsome specimen in the sample art, and the most ridiculous of them is the Black Spermatozoon, gloriously rendered in many forms by Murata. Debris, energy effects and rubble are artistic specialities, and so many amazing examples are supplied. They may seem unnecessary in places, but add a real richness and vibrancy to the pages.

If the designs are great, they stem from One’s imagination in creating so many unusual, and sometimes stomach turning characters. We’ve briefly seen Pig God in action over the past couple of volumes, but as disgusting as that is, wait until you see him face Gums, who also basically eats his opponents. It’s brief, but you won’t dislodge it from your memory. Perhaps skipping dinner is in order after reading.

In the course of what’s going on it’s revealed that anyone monsterised can never be human again, which is tragic if true. Puri Puri Prisoner certainly takes it to heart, but then he takes most things to heart.

As been the case almost since day one, there’s little overall progress to One-Punch Man, but One and Murata are phenomenally talented at distracting readers from that. All of Light and Authenticity were set in the tunnels, and we’ll still be there in Sacrifice.
