Callie and Declan attended the same school, but never knew each other well. That all changes when Callie discovers her mystical heritage, and while Declan isn’t quite the help she’d want when facing strange beings, at least he can see them. They’re now together, but matters are complicated by Lasser, a demon infatuated with Callie who figures if he sticks around long enough Callie will divest herself of Declan.

As we settle in for the continuation, Callie has reconnected with her father, and all parties are involved with the running of a store selling antiques and magical oddities, some of which require delivering. The first delivery is the means for Katie Cook to explain a little more about her world, principally concerning the four types of fairy magic, and it leads into the revelation of which fairy magic Declan possesses.

Concerning Wings is stronger than Through the Elder Woods for having a far greater sense of structure. The delicacy and life to Cook’s attractive cartooning has instant appeal, and the fantasy based sitcom romance between Callie and Declan has been charming from the beginning, but here Cook adds purpose. She still frequently gets carried away and extends a scene too far via needless banter, which is well written, but overall instead of the random meandering of before there’s a reason for much of what happens.

The wings of the title are the pink ones that manifest on Declan’s back, and indicate his heritage may have great importance, which necessitates a journey to a sacred fairy ceremony where the traditional powers are passed on. The journey takes the long way round, but there are discoveries along the way, and plenty of surprises, although the ultimate disclosure probably won’t come as any great shock.

Whereas the delightful art previously disguised lesser writing, the overarching plot can sustain the length of Concerning Wings. There’s a cliffhanger ending connected to lead into Volume Three.
