Review by Frank Plowright
In Withour Fear Al Ewing and Jahnoy Linsdsay constructed a comprehensive re-imagining of the Green Lantern concept. Look closely, and almost everything is there from the personnel to the importance of rings to the planet Oa, but filtered through a distorted prism of enlightenment, which is accrued in stages according to attunement. Most names with the greatest recognition level among Green Lantern fans were introduced in some form, and a few of those absent turn up in the opening chapter of Sojourner, as seen on the sample art, perhaps not the comforting characters of old. And they keep coming, so many names familiar from Green Lantern history, except introduced in a way that the history is the easter egg for older readers, while new readers can take Kari Limbo at face value. The known names don’t all have connections with Green Lantern, though, and making a list after reading Soujourner reveals a vast cast
The nearest to a conventional heroic Green Lantern seen so far is Sojourner Mullein, a former police officer who returned to the town where she grew up just before Abin Sur’s arrival and all that followed. Her reasons for leaving in the first place are aired before Ewing moves the story into the equivalent of a long form TV crime drama with action interludes. Some characters used last time take a rest, while others are transformed, and Hector Hammond continues on his monstrous path.
While the opening chapter is similar in tone to the first volume, until the final chapter the remainder pulls back to something more normal and intimate, yet Lindsay can switch from drawing the destruction of planets to people sitting around a table improbably well. The thrilling pages thrill, the exciting pages excite and the sheer wonder of the universe is delivered when necessary.
Sourjourner is more down to Earth than Without Fear, but it’s equally compelling, and Ewing has so much in motion it’s anyone’s guess where he’s heading next. The ending would suggest it’s in the direction of Mojo, but that could just be a bluff.
