Volume 13 of Dana Simpson’s newspaper strip Phoebe and Her Unicorn has an unwelcome surprise in store for Phoebe when she sees her frenemy Dakota wearing a t-shirt with a unicorn on it. “Unicorns are kinda my thing,” says Phoebe. Dakota is not having any of it. “Guh. You don’t own unicorns. They’re cool right now.” Marigold Heavenly Nostrils has also noticed that unicorns are trending with humans everywhere. Could the Shield of Boringness be broken? Maybe some tech support is in order, which means a trip to a secret location to find out. There are other trips for Phoebe when she accompanies Marigold to her appearance on a highly rated unicorn radio show “Serious Sparkles with Vermilion Candyreins.” Apparently Marigold is known as ‘one of unicornkind’s pre-eminent experts on humans’ but Phoebe is not convinced about her sample size.

One thing that Marigold definitely knows is how to translate goblin-speak, which means an invitation from Dakota to a Goblin Award ceremony where she’s going to be honoured. Ten minutes of ‘blart blart blart’ later, Phoebe has no idea what the award is for, and neither does Dakota. What did Marigold hear? Read on to find out, allowing for Marigold’s warnings about “the language barrier. And the cultural gap,” and the fact that “translation of this sort is an inexact art.” Maybe everyone’s better off not knowing?
