Review by Ian Keogh
Jason Brubaker began reMIND as the story of creative technician Sonja living in a remote community where a lizard man was once sighted, but the first volume ended in an undersea kingdom where the lizard warrior confronted King Erzats. Rather strangely, while everyone else is named, the warrior is only known as Victuals after the cat’s body they now inhabit, while King Erzats now inhabits the warrior’s buff lizard man’s body.
Jason Brubaker picks up where he ended reMIND 1, with the warrior desperately trying to save his kingdom from a corrupt king whose power is based on a web of lies. However, convincing anyone is no easy task when Victuals resembles a cartoon cat in a world of lizard people. A smartly introduced problem means this is also a race against time.
Brubaker’s art continues to look stunning, the pages largely designed across spreads for maximum impact, with the style varying from the silhouettes seen on the sample art to brilliant undersea brightness. However, despite some clever plotting and twists, this conclusion suffers for playing out broadly as expected as fantasy material, whereas the anomalies of fantasy elements in a more or less real world made for a stronger mixture in reMIND 1. It’s the charm of the illustration that’s going to pull all but the youngest readers to the end, but those young readers who haven’t encountered countless variations on the fantasy quest couldn’t have a better looking introduction.
Both volumes of reMIND are combined in the 2026 collected edition, where the story reads better for being complete in a single volume.
