Is there no end to Neill Cameron’s creativity when it comes to donut-flavoured comedy? There doesn’t seem to be, and for that we can all be thankful, not just the youngsters at whom this is aimed.
Last time round it was Donut Squad Make a Mess!, but there’s no need to mess with success, so this is another full batch of single page strips occasionally interrupted by ads for fake merchandise, or seasonal donut flavours, this time including American donuts, the taste of freedom!
Anxiety Donut is the cover star, and it looks as if he’s being chased by a cyborg version of himself. Yes, it’s the Anxiety Donut of the future, a terrible, dark future where donuts are outlawed. How did this future come about? Can it be averted? It’s part of a continuing strip eventually breaking through into others, and cleverly connecting with another series of strips running throughout.
Apart from that, old favourites return, all introduced in the opening spread. Timmy’s still getting far too erudite answers from his father; Caramel Jack’s salty language continues to offend; Justice Donut kicks people in the face and no-one can explain the weirdness of Spronky. But what of the new? Well, we have – ugh – Crazy Mayonaisy, a mayonnaise-filled donut that prompts the heaves merely by existing; the recurring ‘Waiting for Godonut’ strips; the ramblings of Old Donut and Chocky Plops, a variation on Jammyboi, except they exclusively target bottoms with incredibly embarrassing results.
Ending a magnificent selection, we have Spronky ruining the bonus strips. Isn’t it about time we had the Donut Squad/Hostess Fruit Pie crossover?
